THE HAYUM
The Hay-on-Wye Ultra Marathon
APRIL 3RD 2027
The HAYUM, the Hay-on-Wye Ultra Marathon, is a trail race around the north-easternmost tip of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Beacon Beacons National Park. The base for our adventure is Hay-on-Wye, or Y Gelli Gandryll in Welsh, a place celebrated around the world as the “Town of Books”. As the town prepares for the literary festival later in May, we will be exploring famous trails such as the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke Path.
HAY ON WYE
Hay-on-Wye is a place where bookshop browsing meets boots-on adventure. From its castle and winding streets to the open slopes of Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains beyond, there’s plenty to explore from this characterful border town. Expect riverside paths, grassy climbs and sweeping views — with plenty of excuses to stop, catch your breath and wonder why the hills looked smaller from the bookshop.
Point of interest – HAY CASTLE
Hay Castle is a point of interest along the route with a royal story all of its own. Its former owner, bookseller Richard Booth, declared himself King of Hay in 1977 and appointed his horse prime minister. As you pass, spare a thought for a town that took its love of books all the way to independence — and gave a horse a surprisingly good career opportunity.
