CRANUM 30, the Cranogwen Ultra Marathon, is a glorious, brand new coastal adventure that is part of our 10th Anniversary celebrations. The route follows the Ceredigion Coast Path from Aberystwyth to Llangrannog, birthplace of Sarah Jane Rees, the poet, master mariner and gay icon better know as Cranogwen, after whom this race is named.
Replacing our traditional coastal race, VOGUM (Vale of Glamorgan Ultra marathon), this time you can dip your toes (or more!) in the refreshing waters of Cardigan Bay, soar above the sea by scaling the cliffside trail for panoramic views and explore the beautiful Ceredigion Coastal Path.
This race is an ideal recce for the Stable Adventures Sirona 100 and Wild Horse West Coast 200 as it treads the most beautiful segment of those routes.
Those who don’t fancy the full CRANUM 30 route can choose the CRANUM HALF starting in the beautiful village of Aberaeron. All the fun, half the distance, give or take!

LLANGRANNOG & CEREDIGION
CRANUM 30 is a point-to-point course following Llwybr Arfordir Cymru, the Wales Coast Path, past beaches and up cliffs, starting in Aberystwyth and ending in Llangrannog. CRANUM 30 promises beautiful coastal scenery, picturesque towns, working villages, the full spectrum of Ceredigion.
The climb out of Aberystwyth will get our lungs working but don’t forget to pause to look back from the vantage points towards Aberystwyth and out into Cardigan Bay where porpoise swim and a variety of birds can be spotted.
Now we’ve warmed up, we track along the cliffs, past secret coves until we reach Llanrystud Beach and the low cliffs of Llanon, the birthplace of St David. Next we will encounter Aberarth and then Aberaeron, a quaint regency-style town, which is the start of CRANUM HALF.
We hit the coastal path again and head towards Little Quay Bay and New Quay, the last large town before the finish line. This will be an ideal time to grab an ice cream and gird our loins for the final segment to Llangrannog.
With 4,715 feet of elevation, the undulating terrain is mixed, including path, trail, grass, sand and the odd smattering of tarmac, so appropriate footwear is required.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Aberystwyth is a UNESCO City of Literature.
Llanon is the birthplace of St David and where the monks of Strata Florida created fish pools on the coast, trapping them at low tide so they could be caught for food.
The Dylan Thomas Trail runs from Llanon to New Quay and celebrates the life of the poet and his connections to Ceredigion.
New Quay, now a popular tourist destination due to its three beaches, was once an important seafaring town, building smacks, schooners and square riggers. A newspaper noted that in 1907 New Quay had more retired sea captains living in it than any other place of its own size in Wales.
Aberaeron is named after after the Welsh god of war, Aeron.
The fastest known time for running all 870 miles of the Wales Coast Path was once held by Rhys Jenkins, founder of Pegasus Ultra Running. He completed the entire route in 20 days 10 hours, a record that stood for three years.
2011’s coastal protection scheme built by the Welsh Assembly and the EU at Borth unexpectedly revealed the remains of a petrified forest. Perhaps this is part of Cantre’r Gwaelod, the Welsh Atlantis?
