HAYUM half
Hay-on-Wye Half
Saturday 3rd April 2027
HAYUM HALF, the Hay-on-Wye Half, is a 16-mile trail race around the north-easternmost tip of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons National Park. The base for our adventure is Hay-on-Wye, or Y Gelli Gandryll in Welsh, a place celebrated around the world as the “Town of Books”. With the castle and winding streets full of book and antique shops, there’s plenty to find in this characterful border town. As the town prepares for the literary festival later in May, we will be exploring famous trails such as the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke Path, with the views giving us plenty of excuses to stop, catch our breath and wonder why the hills looked smaller from the bookshop.

HAYUM HALF is a 16-mile single loop course through the landscape north of Hay-on-Wye in the north-easternmost tip of Bannau Brycheiniog, the Brecon Beacons National Park. With undulating hills and wonderful views towards Hay Bluff and along the Wye Valley, it’s a worthwhile undertaking and your legs and lungs will feel the workout!
The northern loop follows part of the Wye Valley Walk trail, crosses historic Llowes Common, and climbs to the summit of The Begwns (415m). The route descends to the village of Clyro before we join the Offa’s Dyke Path national trail back to the town and the finish line.
With a total ascent of 2,285 feet, this route is as challenging as it is beautiful, showcasing rolling hills, remote woodland, and beautiful views of the historic county of Radnorshire, Bannau Brycheiniog, the Black Mountains and Lord Hereford’s Knob.
